Is My Child Custody Order Permanent?
Greetings!
Child custody and visitation issues are ever-changing. A child can reach the age of majority, a parent can move to another state or one of the parents can remarry which changes the dynamic of a custody and support agreement. These are some of the more frequently asked questions when it comes to modifying a child custody order.
- What do courts require for a change of custody?
- If I take a job in another city, can I bring my child with me?
- How does the court view the other parent if he or she has a drinking or substance abuse problem?
- Can I modify custody because I don't like my ex's parenting style?
- My ex-spouse has remarried and does not seem to have much interest in our child. Is this a reason to change custody?
- Can I ask for more custody time so that I do not have to pay as much child support?
- What will happen if one of the custodial parents is mentally ill?
This is not an exhaustive list of scenarios that can give rise to a change of custody, but, hopefully, it gives you an idea of legitimate and not so legitimate reasons to change custody and what courts are looking for if your motion is to be successful.
Client Testimonial: I Would Have Given Up
This is the story of how we helped our client stay in his children’s lives.
If you are in the middle of a difficult divorce or custody situation, don’t give up. Don’t try to fight this alone. Find a good attorney who will fight for you and stand alongside you.

Don't DIY Your Divorce
With a rise in do-it-yourself solutions for people facing a divorce, more and more couples who are facing a divorce are asking themselves questions like “do I really need a divorce lawyer?” or “how can a divorce lawyer help me?”.
At Hobson & Hobson in Marietta Georgia, we work with a variety of clients throughout the Marietta and Atlanta areas helping them through their unique divorce process.
We do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach, rather we custom tailor a plan specific to your situation and needs. We look forward to helping you work through the divorce process to the best possible outcome for your family. Our primary goal is to secure your family’s well-being, finances, and future. Here are just a few of the reasons we believe it’s important to have a divorce lawyer on your side:
1.Expert Advice
If you were climbing Mt. Everest, you’d likely go with a sherpa. On vacation in New York City, you would probably hire a cab instead of trying to navigate the busy streets on your own. There are millions of examples of how we rely on someone with meaningful experience, especially when we are up against a difficult task with a lot of unknowns. Facing a divorce is no different; you very likely have never worked your way through the divorce process before. The stakes around your divorce are simply too high to allow it to be a “learning experience”. Trust an experienced divorce attorney to ensure that you can work through the challenges of a divorce and arrive at the best possible outcome for you and your family.
April is Stress Awareness Month
Stress Awareness month was first recognized in April 1992 and after the past year of COVID-19, it’s safe to say that we have all experienced psychological stressors. When you add in family law issues on top of an already stressful time in our society, it can be easy to become overwhelmed.
We encourage you to try to identify your stressors, think about changes you can make to reduce the areas of stress in your life, and to practice self-care so that you can recover. Chronic stress takes a significant toll on the body, including raising blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart attack.
Use techniques such as meditation and physical relaxation, as well as exercise and adequate sleep to rejuvenate yourself. Also take advantage of your support network by reaching out to call friends and family members. You are not alone and asking for help is okay. Supporting each other and standing together through these rough times is important.
